Mumbler of the Year

Today’s parallel post is all about smoothies! Get your blender out and let’s start smoothing!

Gelati: One thing that I miss from home is Orange Julius smoothies! Since it’s orange season here in Italy, I thought I should re-create Orange Julius’ classic – the Julius Originals.
Ingredients for 3 servings

  • 3 fresh oranges, peeled
  • 2 cups ice
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 2 tbsp. of honey
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • zest of 1 orange
Chisa: I drink smoothie mostly for health benefits so I like to include some veggies! Raw fruits and veggie can make your body cold so I like to throw in some ginger for a nice kick.

  • pineapple
  • apple
  • orange
  • honey
  • ginger
  • spinach
  • orange juice

Gelati: I think making smoothies are pretty self-explanatory. You just have to add all the ingredients in the blender and blend :).
Chisa: Ditto!

Gelati: My smoothie turned out to be a bit pink because oranges during this season are blood-orange. OK, I must confess, my smoothie wasn’t a complete success… And I’d like you to learn from my mistakes:1.) I peeled the oranges by hand and they still had a lot of pith attached to them. What’s pith? That’s the white stringy stuff that’s on an orange after you peel it. It’s highly nutritious (anti-cancer agents, antioxidants, full of fiber and high in vitamin c), but it doesn’t mix so well with the smoothie…. so if you want delicious smoothie over a highly nutritious smoothie, get rid of the pith!2.) I added 2 teaspoons of honey instead of 2 tablespoons in hope to be healthier, but no-no-no. It was way too sour for my taste.3.) I added one cup of ice instead of two because I didn’t have enough ice at home… and this is worst thing I did wrong! The essence of Orange Julius Originals is to have this icy, almost crunchy texture. If you don’t put enough ice into it, it will just turn out to be an average smoothie…

At the end, my smoothie was drinkable and my boyfriend finished his portion, but it certainly wasn’t what I expected. Oh well, practice makes perfect right? Until next time!

Chisa: Turned out nice and smooth! It’s pretty filling so it’s great for breakfast. :)
Quick tip for Gelati:
You should include all the white pith on the orange, it makes it waaaay healthier. Did you blend for over a minute? It’s really important to blend until everything is smooth. My first smoothie, I only blended for like 30 seconds and it wasn’t so smooth… Smoothie is great because you can’t taste the healthy bits inside, so might as well make them super nutritious! 😉
