Alternative Online Shopping

Fashion e-commerce has grown and evolved drastically over the past decade. Consumers have became more receptive towards the concept of shopping online. I still remembered when net-a-porter first launched, I was a bit skeptical whether people would actually pay thousands of dollars to buy top end fashion products without going through the conventional in-store experience. Alas, there is demand to meet the supply, and a lot of it too! Online shopping has become more mainstream to different market segments for different reasons. Some prefer online shopping because the products that they want simply aren’t available in-store. Others like to shop online because it’s convenient (you can shop in your pajamas without any time restrictions). And there are some people who like online shopping because they can compare prices easily and find great bargains on websites like YOOX or GILT.

Today I would like to recommend three alternative online shops that might be new to you as they each serve a rather niche market. Each of them offers something unique that differentiates themselves from the rest of the online fashion market. Hope you will like them!

NOT JUST A LABEL is a website that aims to support and discover pioneers in contemporary fashion. A lot of the things that they sell are really conceptual and one-of-a-kind (just look at the bags above!) It’s similar to Esty in a way because they both support new designers, but NOT JUST A LABEL really filters out the amateurs. The prices aren’t cheap, but a lot of them are hand-made or made-to-order, and you feel good about yourself whenever you purchase something from there because you are supporting emerging designers!

Don’t you get a bit numb from going to the same fashion chains all the time? Don’t you miss the personal touch from boutique stores? Well, look no further. Farfetch is a website that brings together independent fashion boutiques from all over the world into one online platform. Thanks to the internet, you no longer need to fly to exotic places to buy something different from your usual shopping mall. Check out my recent shopping experience at Farfetch here. The products are shipped straight from the boutique so opening a package from Farfetch feels a lot more special than getting something from online fashion giants like ASOS for sure.

Okay, I cannot afford anything on this website, but it’s still fun to do some online window browsing. What’s special about Moda Operandi is that they are the only place to pre-order looks straight from the runway through online designer trunkshows. This means you can order the newest fashion months before they are available anywhere else. Like I mentioned before, the things on their website are wayyyy out of my price range, but it’s good to know what will be in-fashion a few seasons ahead of time so I can shop more strategically next time I go to mainstream fashion stores like H&M and Zara.

So which are your favorite online shops?
